The Galway Wool Co-op was an award-winning entry in the EU CAP Network’s Agricultural and Rural Inspiration Awards (ARIA) 2024 held in Brussels on the 4th of December.
ARIA 2024 recognised the greenest, smartest, most socially inclusive, innovative and resilient Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) projects implemented at a local level throughout Europe. It also placed the spotlight on projects that empower young people and women in rural areas.
The Galway Wool Co-op project, which received LEADER support and was nominated by CAP Network Ireland for the ARIA awards, was singled out as a ‘Highly Commended Project’ in the ‘Socio-Economic Fabric of Rural Areas’ category. Along with the Farm Carbon EIP project, Galway Wool was among only 24 finalists selected from over 100 entries across Europe.
In 2019, the Galway Wool Co-op, which is the first of its kind in Ireland, was set up to restore the cultural integrity of Native Irish Galway Wool and to establish niche market opportunities domestically and internationally.
Funding received under the previous LEADER programme, in 2021, towards the development of a unique project website (which acts as the Co-operative’s E-commerce Marketplace and Trading Platform), as well as a range of promotional materials, has helped to enhance the impact of the initiative nationally.
Crucially, the farmer-led Galway Wool has connected growers with buyers interested in preserving this rare wool in Ireland, resulting in a substantial increase in the base price of wool from an average of €0.20 to €2.50 per kilogram. By harnessing the goodwill of growers to draw wool from throughout Ireland, a newly created community now works diligently together to bring awareness to the consumer of the variety of applications for strong wool.
