Minister for Agriculture, Food, and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue T.D., along with Senator Pippa Hackett, Minister of State for Land Use and Biodiversity with special responsibility for Horticulture, have announced the launch of two new schemes designed to promote innovation and diversification among primary producers in the horticulture sector.

Minister Hackett expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, stating: “Support for innovation and diversification is a cornerstone of the National Horticulture Strategy for 2023 to 2027. I’m thrilled we have successfully launched these crucial schemes. The horticulture sector is eager to innovate and diversify, which will enhance efficiency and productivity. This progress will ultimately increase the availability of Irish-grown fruit and vegetables, reducing the need for imports. These schemes will be vital in helping our primary producers realize their plans, maximizing the potential of Irish horticulture, and securing its long-term viability within the broader agricultural sector.

Minister McConalogue highlighted the economic significance of the sector, noting, “The horticulture industry significantly contributes to the Irish economy, with a farmgate value of €566 million in 2023. The National Strategy for Horticulture 2023-2027 outlines a vision for a more profitable, value-added sector driven by innovation and sustainability. With a total budget of €1.35 million, these schemes support the strategy’s implementation, allowing growers to explore new diversification opportunities and invest in innovative technologies.

The two schemes which are funded by the National Exchequer are:

1. 2024 Scheme for Innovation and Diversification in Horticulture (Feasibility / Desk Studies): This scheme targets small and medium-sized enterprises involved in primary horticulture production. It aims to support those looking to innovate and diversify by funding necessary feasibility or desk-based studies.

2. 2024 Scheme for Innovation and Diversification in Horticulture (Capital Investments): This scheme is designed to increase innovation and diversification by providing grants for capital investments in specialized plants and equipment.
These initiatives are expected to play a pivotal role in driving the horticulture sector forward, fostering a more sustainable and productive industry in Ireland.

The deadline for receipt of completed applications under both these schemes is midnight on Friday 23rd August 2024.
