In anticipation of Science Week 2024, which runs from 10th to 17th November, Martin Heydon T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine with responsibility for Research and Development, announced the release of Pioneering Research Progress: Highlights from the 2017 and 2019 Research Awards.
The publication showcases 21 research projects addressing key areas such as climate action, environmental sustainability, safe and nutritious food processing, sustainable agriculture, and responsible forest management. The selected projects stem from the Department’s 2017 and 2019 Thematic Research Calls, with several projects co-funded by the European Union under the European Research Area Network (ERA-NET) joint Calls.
Minister Heydon expressed his enthusiasm for the booklet’s release, stating, “This publication exemplifies our Department’s commitment to funding public-good research, ensuring that its findings reach end users, including farmers, advisors, policymakers, and other industry stakeholders. The projects highlighted here offer significant advancements in areas such as greenhouse gas reduction, soil carbon sequestration, and food processing innovation.”
Designed to engage a broad audience, Pioneering Research Progress allows readers to explore each project in detail and provides links to further resources through the Department’s research dashboard. The publication will be available for download starting Monday, November 11th, on the Department’s website at gov.ie – Research – News, Events and Media.
Reflecting on Science Week’s significance, Minister Heydon added, “Science Week provides an opportunity to celebrate the role of science in our everyday lives. This publication is a testament to the scientific discoveries that can be translated into practical applications, fostering innovation and enhancing the value of our food systems. I extend my appreciation to all researchers, postgraduate students, technicians, industry partners, and stakeholders who contributed to these impactful projects.”
