Successful agricultural knowledge transfer lies in bridging the gap between scientific research and farm-level practice. The MSc in Agricultural Extension and Innovation at University College Dublin (UCD) is a postgraduate program designed to bridge this gap and to strengthen Ireland’s Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System (AKIS) in the process.
Rather than concentrating solely on traditional crop and livestock production, the MSc focuses on social and behavioural science, adult education, and reflective practice. Modules such as Agricultural Extension & Innovation, Behaviour Change in Agriculture, and Design Thinking for Agricultural Innovation equip students with the practical skills required to support farmer decision-making. By analysing the broader ecosystem surrounding farm families, encompassing public and private advisors, educators, agri-media, co-operatives, and policymakers, the program ensures that research and innovation translate into real-world practice.
Evolution and Growth Since 2018
Since its introduction in 2018, the MSc has grown substantially in both scope and accessibility to meet the expanding demands of the agri-food sector:
- Flexible Study Routes: The program has broadened from its initial structure into a multi-stream model, including a 1-year full-time path on campus and a 2-year part-time route delivered in collaboration with Macra Agricultural Skillnet for industry professionals.
- Teagasc Collaborative Pathways: Development of 2-year funded pathways with Teagasc enables students to complete mentored placements in Teagasc advisory offices or agricultural colleges, spending half their time gaining hands-on advisory experience and the other half engaging in coursework and reflective practice.
- Diverse Student Cohorts & Industry Links: The program has expanded its reach to attract students from agricultural science, humanities, sociology, and health science backgrounds, while offering practical research placements and scholarship support, such as the FDC Scholarship.
Shaping the Future of Irish Agriculture
Graduates of the MSc are actively shaping the future of Ireland's AKIS. Alumni hold key roles across Teagasc advisory services, agricultural colleges, private consultancies, the Department of Agriculture, and agricultural media outlets. By training extension professionals to address urgent challenges, including climate mitigation, organic farming, generation renewal, and farmer mental health, UCD’s MSc in Agricultural Extension and Innovation is building a resilient, adaptable, and forward-looking advisory network for Ireland.
