The first round of the BISC-E 2024 European finals was held on the 6th of September in Brussels. Ireland was represented by a student team from the School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, University College Dublin who developed a concept for an integrated anaerobic digestion and microalgae process to abstract omega oils. The team were selected to represent Ireland at the national BISC-E finals in February and received coaching to further develop their prototype and business plan in preparation for the European Finals.
BISC-E invites students from all disciplines to design solutions that contribute to a sustainable and circular economy and help to overcome the hurdles standing in the way of a climate-neutral Europe? These innovative products or services designed can tackle technological, environmental or societal challenges if they are wholly or partly derived from renewable biological sources. BISC-E encourages students to explore the emerging field of bio-based materials while developing a new bio-based product or process. BISC-E is funded and coordinated by The Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), a non-profit organization set up in Brussels in 2013, focused on strengthening the bio-based industries sector in Europe.
Each team develops an innovative product or process which is bio-based (uses renewable, biological resources). You don’t need to produce your product yet, but you and your team should make it plausible that it could work! These ideas are presented to a jury of experts from industry and academia. The presentation must address sustainability, technical feasibility and economic viability of your innovation. Students are encouraged to connect with peers and industry leaders while they develop skills in interdisciplinary collaboration, challenge-based learning and the design and presentation of solutions towards carbon-neutrality.
The challenge is open to students studying in colleges and universities at a range of levels (from final year undergraduate up to and including PhD students). Due to the multidisciplinary character of the challenge, it is recommended to have representatives from multiple disciplines in your team, of which science should be one. Team members can come from different institutions.
