AKIS in Ireland

Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS) is the combined organisation and interactions between persons, organisations and institutions that produce and use knowledge and innovation for agriculture, forestry, rural development, and other related areas. Each European Member State has its own national AKIS to connect different stakeholders, including farmers, educational institutions, researchers, advisors, agri-businesses, NGOs, and policymakers, to improve the efficiency, sustainability, and competitiveness of agriculture in the EU.

Knowledge and innovation play a key role in helping farmers, foresters and rural communities meet current and future economic, social and environmental challenges. Effective AKIS are needed to ensure that knowledge is shared from and between those who produce it, and those who use it, thus creating a connected network of stakeholders which is resilient and adaptive to current and future challenges.

AKIS is a critical component of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The CAP emphasizes the importance of innovation and knowledge transfer to ensure sustainable agriculture and rural development. The EU supports AKIS networks through funding programs, research initiatives, and policy frameworks that encourage collaboration among stakeholders.

AKIS Actors in Ireland

The purpose of the AKIS Actors in Ireland map is to support the work of the AKIS Coordination Group. The map was developed in collaboration with the AKIS Steering Group and AKIS Coordination Group. AKIS Farmer Survey

A farmer survey focusing on the knowledge and communication needs of farmers took place in the latter half of 2024. This survey was collaboratively developed by the AKIS Coordination Group (DAFM, ACA, Teagasc, CAP Network Ireland) to better understand the current needs of farmers in relation to how they currently source knowledge and information.

The survey was administered by CAP Network Ireland and the results will be used to inform AKIS actors to help ensure a well-functioning Irish AKIS that connects people and facilitates knowledge flows between research, cooperation and advisory services and is more responsive to the growing information needs of farmers, rural economy actors, advisors, researchers and other food system & bioeconomy stakeholders.

The survey results were presented at the third meeting of the AKIS Coordination Group. Materials are available here.

AKIS Coordination Group – First Meeting

In the CAP Strategic Plan 2023-2027, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) committed to forming an Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation System (AKIS) coordination group to improve synergies and complementarities between the institutions that make up Ireland’s AKIS.

The goal of the coordination group is to structure and mobilise AKIS actors together on a planned and regular basis. Creating consistent engagement will support and speed up modernisation, innovation and knowledge flows, to ensure improved knowledge exchange and implementation in practice.
