The 5-Year Strategic Plan for St. Declan’s Way was successfully launched by Minister Mary Butler TD on Friday the 5th of April, 2024, within the picturesque backdrop of the Rock of Cashel. The ceremony was held in the Hall of the Vicar’s Choral, with over 65 in attendance, including representatives from Waterford City and County Council, Tipperary County Council, as well as notable figures from local organisations and historical societies along with participants from the 45 Walks Scheme in County Waterford.
The Strategic Plan, jointly funded under the previous LEADER Programme by Waterford Leader Partnership and collaboratively crafted by the St. Declan’s Way Steering Committee and Tourism Development International, charts a course to elevate the prominence of this ancient pilgrimage route on both national and international scales.
Outlined within the plan is a comprehensive strategy to enhance trail infrastructure, upgrade off-road paths, recruit a development manager, and launch targeted marketing initiatives tailored to capitalise on the increasing interest in walking tourism. With an investment projected at €2.4 million, the plan aims to draw over 20,000 walkers annually by 2029, with an expected economic impact of €35.4 million on rural Ireland.
During the event, words of appreciation and congratulations were extended to St. Declan’s Way landowners, the Steering Committee, and other key stakeholders by various speakers, including Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council Gerard Darcy, David McNulty of Tourism Development International, Chairperson Gráinne Moynihan of the St. Declan’s Way Committee. In addition, Minister Butler commended the collaborative efforts of the Committee and stakeholders, highlighting them as a shining example of the positive outcomes that arise when communities come together for a common cause.
