The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, has announced the opening of year three of the Sheep Improvement Scheme (SIS) to new entrants. The five-year, €100 million SIS provides financial support to farmers for taking extra steps to improve the welfare of their flock.
The Sheep Improvement Scheme was introduced in 2023 to enhance animal health and welfare in the sheep sector. Financial supports worth €12 per ewe are paid to farmers for taking extra steps to improve the welfare of their flock.
To receive the financial support, farmers must complete two of the following welfare measures:
- lameness control
- mineral supplementation of ewes post mating
- meal feeding lambs post weaning
- parasite control (faecal egg count)
- management of pregnant ewes (scanning)
- flystrike control
- mineral supplementation of lambs pre-weaning
- Genotyped Ram Action
The Genotyped Ram Action must be completed at least once in the first three years of the scheme. Farmers with 150 breeding ewes or less need only complete this action once. Farmers with over 150 breeding ewes must complete this action again in any subsequent scheme year after the first three years.
All necessary records must be maintained and be in compliance with the Terms and Conditions of the Sheep Improvement Scheme. Farmers undertaking parasite control must use the approved list of laboratories for sampling.
Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon said at the opening of the scheme: “I am delighted to announce that applications for entry to year three of the Sheep Improvement Scheme are now open to qualifying new entrants. This is the third year of the SIS, which builds on the progress made by the Sheep Welfare Scheme in the previous CAP. This scheme, which facilitates an annual opening for new entrants, demonstrates the continuing commitment of this Government to the sheep sector for the coming years.”
Applications must be made on agfood.ie. The application opening date is 25 March 2025. Application closing date is 11.59 pm on 29 April 2025.
The Sheep Improvement Scheme is funded under Ireland’s CAP Strategic Plan (CSP) 2023-2027. To learn more about the scheme, click here.
