On Tuesday 23rd July, the Tullamore Farm Suckler and Sheep Open Day took place. Tullamore Farm opened its gates to thousands of beef and sheep farmers from across the country.
This event was held in partnership with the Irish Farmers Journal and sponsored by Zurich Farm Insurance. CAP Network Ireland was in attendance and it proved to be a great opportunity to discuss topics of current interest with the farmers.
Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue T.D. was also in attendance, giving a speech during the day to the farmers attending the demonstration portion of the event.
The farm on which the event was held is home to 80 suckler cows and 250 mid-season ewe lambing flock, which is often spotlighted in the Journal. These animals were on display during the day with their performance from the previous year posted for all to see. In the past 12 months the farm has gone to 100% AI as well as the use of ‘sexed semen’ has been introduced.
The farm returned impressive figures from 2023 with a gross margin of €1,231/ha. Output costs and margins rose in 2023 but did not keep pace with the ever rising input costs.
