The second Annual Report for Food Vision 2030 has been launched. The report highlights the progress being made as Ireland strives to improve all the strands of sustainability (i.e. environmental, economic and social) in the agriculture, fisheries, forestry and processing sectors.
At the launch, Minister of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, T.D. hailed Food Vision as a “transformative roadmap for the agri-food sector, developed by the sector for the sector, using a food systems approach. The Report highlights the depth and breadth of activity as we continue to work collaboratively in pursuing our ambitions to make Ireland a world leader in Sustainable Food Systems.”
The Annual Report gives an overview of progress to date and highlights some of the key achievements. It also provides an update on the work of the High Level Implementation Committee (HLIC) and the Environmental Working Sub-Group. Food Vision contains four primary missions, 22 goals and 218 actions for the agri-food sector to work towards in the period to 2030. To date, 20 actions (9%) are complete, 121 actions (56%) have substantial action undertaken, 75 actions (34%) have commenced and are progressing.
Among the key achievements over the last year mentioned in the Annual Report were:
1. the launch of Ireland’s new Forestry Programme
2. a new Horticulture Strategy
3. a Bioeconomy Action Plan
4. a new Fertiliser Database
5. a National Dialogue on Women in Agriculture
6. a Food Waste Prevention Roadmap
7. Ireland’s 4th National Biodiversity Action Plan
8. a Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development
9. the establishment of An Rialálaí Agraibhia (Agri-Food Regulator)
10. a National Genotyping Programme
11. a Suckler Carbon Efficiency Programme
12. a Dairy Beef Welfare Scheme
13. securing Irish Grass Fed Beef as a Protected Geographical Indication.
The launch took place at the 11th meeting of the Food Vision 2030 High Level Implementation Committee (HLIC) where the Final Report from the Food Vision Tillage Group, the Enterprise Ireland Food Innovation Summit and the Sustainable Food Systems Ireland (SFSI) new three year Strategy for the period 2024-27 were also discussed.
