CAP Network Ireland recently collaborated with eTownz to host three meetings of a preparatory Smart Village taskforce in Ireland. The meetings, held between February and May 2024, brought together representatives from key national and regional organisations involved in community development.
Among the main aims of this preparatory taskforce was to establish the need for a dedicated Smart Village taskforce in Ireland (like those that exist in a number of other member states); and to discuss what direction and structure a potential taskforce might take.
As part of the meetings, LEADER was widely acknowledged to be the principal funding mechanism currently for smart projects and initiatives in Ireland. The need for all Smart Village actions to respond to the needs of local communities, through the adoption of a ‘bottom-up’ approach, was also heavily emphasised.
Upon conclusion of the taskforce, it was agreed that there would be an appetite for a longer-term taskforce on Smart Villages in Ireland, which would likely extend over an initial 12-month period.
A recording of the third meeting, held on 15 May, which summaries the main results and findings of the taskforce, can be viewed here.
