CAP Network Ireland was delighted to participate in the Young LEADER Forum, which took place in Vierumäki, Finland, from the 11th-13th June 2024. This event, organised by the EU CAP Network, in close collaboration with the Finnish National Network, brought together motivated young people from rural areas connected with LEADER at local level, together with organisations and administrations at regional, national and EU level.
The Forum created a space for exchanges on LEADER related topics between young people and a variety of stakeholders including Managing Authorities, National Networks and national LEADER networks. The key characteristics of the event were its participatory nature and the involvement of young people in the co-design of its activities. It enabled the voices of young people to be amplified through the sharing of their ideas to better ensure that their contributions are valued and incorporated into the changes needed in their rural areas.
It was clear from the three days of interaction that youth involvement in community-led local development is valuable and necessary in rural areas. It was widely acknowledged that the LEADER programme can be targeted very effectively to support projects that directly involve young people. There is, though, a recognition that there is still a significant percentage of young people who are not aware of LEADER and the supports available through the programme for projects they may be interested in engaging with.
One particularly interesting aspect of the Forum agenda was the ‘Actions Orienteering’ session. Groups of 8-10 people were given the opportunity to create their own vision of what an International Young LEADER community should look like. Daniel Bennett, of the CAP Network Ireland team, was asked to pitch his group’s idea to a judging panel, with the aid of a poster presentation. Each group was then subsequently ranked, and the winning team’s proposal will now be considered as part of the design of this International Young LEADER community which is a key output of the Young LEADER Forum.
On the final day, participants were given the opportunity to explore rural Finland and visited LEADER supported projects involving young people.
