CAP Network Ireland attended the online meeting of the SCAR AKIS SWG (Standing Committee on Agricultural Research Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems Strategic Working Group) on 18th June.
The Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) advises the European Commission (EC), EU Member States and Associated Countries on R&I priorities to address Europe’s challenges in agriculture, fisheries, food systems, forestry, and the wider bioeconomy.
The specific role of this event, held by SCAR’s strategic working group on Agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS), was for member states to discuss ideas for implementation of the CAP AKIS Plan for the CAP after 2027, the role of AKIS in responding to challenges, and to share ideas for developing AKIS for rural innovation and co-innovation which works with and for farmers.
A number of demonstration farms and initiatives across EU member states were also highlighted with a focus on the importance of demonstration farms in supporting farmer-led research and innovation, co-innovation, and effective knowledge exchange.
One of the topics of focus during the session was the opportunity for AKIS to be included in the new EU Research and Innovation Framework Programme (FP10), which is to be introduced mid-2025. The first ideas and recommendations among member states on the potential role of AKIS in the upcoming FP10 program included supporting capacity building among farmers, simplifying financial instruments, enhanced focus on rural development, and supporting better knowledge exchange and transfer in agriculture.
The Strategic Working Group aims to continuously improve the functioning of knowledge and innovation systems in the bioeconomy and achieve greater impact of the Multi-Actor Approach (MAA) implementation in EU AKIS.
