Over the past decade, there have been an average of 19 fatal incidents on Irish farms each year, accounting for more than two in five of all workplace fatalities. In addition, there are approximately 4,500 non-fatal incidents occurring each year on Irish farms, some of which result in life changing injuries.
For this reason, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with special responsibility for Farm Safety, Martin Heydon T.D., has announced an open call for proposals for farmer health, safety and wellbeing projects. Successful applicants will be funded from the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine’s dedicated farm safety budget which is proving €850,000 in funding. Applicants under this call must cover one or more of the following themes in order to be successful:
• Farm safety
• Farmers physical health
• Farmer mental health and wellbeing.
“We have to change farming’s record on safety. I am committed to keeping farmer safety, health and wellbeing at the centre of a sustainable agricultural sector.” Minister Heydon said at the official announcement, “There is a role here for everyone in the sector which is why I am launching this open call for applications for projects that address safety, health and wellbeing on Irish farms.”
The aim of the initiative is to change behaviour and practices to improve safety, health and wellbeing on farms and successful proposals will have to prove that they will be of significant benefit to farmers, their families and rural communities.
