Championing Ireland’s Women Farmers as IYWF Ambassador

Mar 24, 2026 | Farm Viability

In 2026, Ireland celebrates the International Year of the Woman Farmer, highlighting the country’s commitment to recognising the importance and contributions of women to farming and agrifood systems.

At the heart of this campaign is Carina Roseingrave, a dedicated farmer from County Clare who has been chosen as Ireland’s national ambassador for the International Year of the Woman Farmer. Announced by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Carina’s appointment recognises not only her work on the land but also her commitment to promoting the role of women in farming and rural enterprise.

Carina farms at the foothills of the Burren in Crusheen, Co. Clare, where she works on a family-run mixed farm alongside her brother. The enterprise includes dairy and suckler cattle, with pedigree Limousin and Charolais herds, and in recent years the farm has diversified to include free-range egg production.

Farming has long been central to her life. Growing up on a suckler farm, Carina saw herself becoming increasingly more involved, particularly following the tragic death of her father when she was just 12 years old. The enterprise has since evolved into a successful and innovative business partnership, managed by Carina and her brother, that demonstrates a commitment to high-quality produce, protecting biodiversity and engaging traditional land management practices.

Having previously participated in the ACORNS (Accelerating the Creation of Rural Nascent Start-ups) programme, which supports female entrepreneurs in rural areas, Carina credits the initiative with helping her develop the knowledge, confidence and business skills needed to grow and diversify the family farm. The farm has also availed of other CAP Strategic Plan supports such as the Suckler Carbon Efficiency Programme (SCEP)Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES), Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS) Scheme & the Eco-Scheme.

Carina’s role as IYWF Ambassador will see her represent women working across Irish agriculture throughout the year participating in events, media campaigns and discussions aimed at increasing recognition of women’s contributions to farming and encouraging greater female participation in the sector.

The United Nations designated 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer to highlight the crucial role women play in global agri-food systems. Despite their contributions, women often face barriers including limited access to land, finance, training and decision-making opportunities.
