The winners of the International Year of the Woman Farmer Photo Competition were announced during the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s International Women’s Day Conference held on 5 March 2026 in Athlone.

Organised by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine in association with CAP Network Ireland, the competition aimed to celebrate the role of women across Ireland’s agri-food sector and highlight their contribution to farming, fisheries, sustainability, and rural communities. The competition invited participants to capture photographs showcasing the diverse roles women play in agriculture and rural life across Ireland.

Farming

Gillian Smith won the Farming category and was also named the overall winner for her photograph titled “Changing Roles” (Co. Donegal.)

Fisheries

Mary O’Brien won the Fisheries category with her photograph titled “Oyster Fisherwoman Mary – Tides in Her Hands, Resilience in Her Bones” (Co. Kerry).

 Sustainability

Blathnaid Gallagher was awarded the Sustainability category for her photograph titled “Where Women Lead, Sustainable Futures Grow” (East Galway).

Rural Diversification

Elaine Clarke won the Rural Diversification category with her photograph titled “Selfie Time” (County Kilkenny).

This initiative forms part of Ireland’s activities marking the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026, a global initiative led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to recognise and promote the role of women in agrifood systems.
