Tackling the Barriers Facing Women in Farming

Mar 24, 2026 | EIP-AGRI, Farm Viability

The "Making Farms Work for Women EIP" is co-funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and the European Union, and is led by Claire Brennan, an agricultural advisor based in County Mayo. This pilot project aims to increase visibility for women in Agriculture as there is a lack of recognition for the efforts of women in farming. Moreover, it is a comprehensive framework designed to tackle the barriers women face in the farming community – underrepresentation, gender bias, access to appropriate equipment, training, and leadership opportunities.

The project focus will come under three work streams over the next three years:

  • Handle with Weight
  • Handle with Care
  • Handle with Safety.

During the next nine months, data will be collected to identify the main issues to resolve after visiting the farms of 35-40 women. Thus far, participant farmers have been recruited to help proceed with developing tools and training to solve heavy lifting for female farmers.

Additionally, a collaboration with ACRES Ireland, ACRES West Connaught & ACRES Donegal, will allow for a rollout of workshops across the whole of Ireland geared to address practical issues that are concern women in farming. Collaborating allows the project to reach a far greater audience in less time and will also inform future collaborations.

At its core, “Making Farms Work for Women” aims to incorporate farming methods for women to foster resilience, sustainable, and tech-enabled practices that carry on into future generations.  Workshops will be organised to encourage young girls to take up farming at an early stage so that they feel confident in this area. Without tackling safety and issues surrounding dealing with heavy weights on farms, less young women would feel encouraged to take up a role in farming. If there are no women specific solutions, then we have little chance of making farming attractive to daughters and granddaughters.
