Start of Sheep Improvement Scheme Payments

Dec 1, 2025 | Farm Viability

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD, announced on 24 November that payments valued at €16.91 million under the Sheep Improvement Scheme (SIS) have begun issuing to 15,527 participants.
The Sheep Improvement Scheme was introduced to enhance animal health and welfare in the sheep sector and continues to play an important role in supporting farmers. By renewing the scheme for the third consecutive year, the government shows its continued support for the sheep sector.

The scheme provides support of €12 per breeding ewe for actions that improve flock health and welfare. This payment can be combined with the €11.50 per ewe available under the 2025 National Sheep Welfare Scheme. In total, farmers can receive €23.50 per ewe in 2025, a notable increase compared to the €20 per ewe in 2024 for those participating in both schemes. Payments currently issuing represent an 85% advance, with the remaining 15% due from April 2026.

The government emphasises the importance of paying farmers on time and reminded farmers that if they have received correspondence from the Department seeking documentation or clarification, they should respond as quickly as possible so that outstanding cases can be processed without delay.

In addition, farmers must remember that, in order to remain eligible for payments under both sheep schemes, their annual Sheep Census returns must be submitted on time each year. This requirement remains essential to ensure continuity of support and correct payment allocations.
