Revised Risk-Assessment Templates for Accessible Farmer Monitoring of Farm Safety

Feedback from 100 farmers who were phone surveyed as part of the FOURM Connemara Farm Health and Safety EIP revealed that the standard farm risk assessment template provided by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is often viewed as inaccessible. At 35 pages long, its format can discourage farmers from using it. Furthermore, farmers in Connemara say it fails to include important, region-specific risks, such as those associated with silage, which is a significant hazard for farmers.

To address this, the FORUM Connemara EIP team developed revised risk assessment templates. These were created to be more accessible and user-friendly for farmers. The new templates are significantly shorter, at just 11 pages, and use a simple tick-the-box format. Crucially, the content was adapted to be directly relevant to the specific risks faced by farmers in the Connemara region, making the entire process more efficient and practical.

The use of a tailored, more accessible, and simpler risk assessment template has the potential to greatly increase farmer engagement with farm safety. By making the process less daunting and more relevant, it encourages the regular use of safety checklists. This leads to better identification of on-farm hazards and, consequently, a safer working environment, helping to reduce accidents and improve the culture of safety on farms.

The challenge of overly complex or generic safety paperwork is likely faced by farmers across Ireland, not just in Connemara. This innovation demonstrates a successful strategy for improving engagement by simplifying and tailoring official documents. This approach could be adopted nationwide, providing an opportunity to create more effective, user-centric safety tools that better serve the needs of the entire Irish farming community and improve national farm safety standards.

This shows that essential safety tools like risk assessments can be made more practical and less time-consuming. Farmers should understand that if they find standard templates difficult to use, simplified and more relevant alternatives can be developed. This encourages farmers to actively engage with their own farm safety planning, using tools that are effective for them, to ensure they have a comprehensive and usable safety plan in place.
