Quad bike roll bar trial shows promise for the adoption of these safety devices in Europe.

Almost half of all work-related agricultural fatalities in Ireland involve vehicles, with quad bikes accounting for 14% of these incidents between 2011 and 2020. A staggering 75% of those who suffered fatal quad bike accidents were aged 60 or over. This highlights a critical need for effective safety measures to protect farmers, particularly from quad bike rollovers.

To address the danger of quad bike rollovers, Roll-Over Protective Structures (ROPS) can be fitted to provide a protective space for the rider in the event of an accident. This EIP project initiated a farmer-led trial of ROPS. Three farmers tested three different ROPS designs:

  1. AIR ROPS
  2. Lifeguard
  3. QuadBar

The trial assessed the real-world functionality, ease of assembly, value for money, durability, and compatibility with other farm equipment like trailers and sprayers, of each of the ROPS designs.

Farmer-led evaluation is crucial for user acceptance. If a safety device hinders everyday work, it will not be used. The trial in this EIP identified a preferred ROPS model, the QuadBar from Australia, based on farmer feedback. However, it must be notyed that at present this model is not CE approved for use in Europe. The HAS did, however, approve this trial to try trial the ROPS, despite no CE Certification yet. Evaluation reports have been shared with the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) at their request.

This practical, farmer-centric trial provides vital information that could inform decisions on making effective, user-friendly ROPS designs available in Ireland, ultimately reducing injuries and fatalities from quad bike accidents.

Given the high rate of vehicle-related accidents on Irish farms, there is a significant opportunity to improve farmer safety through the adoption of proven protective equipment. This EIP’s findings provide a foundation for further trials of the preferred Quadbar ROPS device, potentially leading to its approval for the Irish market. The project demonstrates the value of involving farmers directly in testing and selecting safety solutions to ensure they are practical for Irish farming conditions.

This research is directly relevant to any farmer who uses a quad bike. It underscores the serious risks associated with quad rollovers and highlights that effective, farmer-approved protective solutions are being investigated. Farmers should be aware of the life-saving potential of ROPS and can follow the progress of these trials, which may lead to new, approved safety devices becoming available. This information encourages farmers to prioritise quad safety if they have a quad bike on their farm
