Programme for Monitoring and Verifying Ecological Outcomes on Farms

Despite the rapid growth in the number of Organic farmers in Ireland, there are challenges around the adequacy of market rewards and consumer awareness in relation to the ecological benefits of organic farming. There is a need for a system that scientifically verifies and monitors ecological outcomes on organic farms, therefore building trust and awareness.

Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV)™ is a trademarked methodology developed by the Savory Institute. It measures and tracks ecological health based on outcomes rather than prescribed actions. By certifying regenerative agricultural products, EOV™ enables access to the Land to Market Programme, which connects consumers with verified sustainable products and rewards farmers economically.

The EOV™ system uses scientifically validated indicators to assess soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem processes. It adopts an outcome-based approach, making it versatile for global ecosystems. Adaptive management practices allow farmers to refine their methods based on annual and long-term monitoring results. Transparency and accountability are ensured through multi-level quality assurance and data consistency.

EOV™ can create economic incentives for farmers by integrating their products into value chains that reward sustainability, such as the Land to Market Programme. By enhancing market differentiation, it encourages brands to adopt regeneratively produced materials and ingredients.

While the EOV™ Programme has gained traction in the U.S. and Australia, its implementation in Europe is still emerging. For the Irish organic context, EOV™ may be a useful insight into a methodology for monitoring and verifying ecological outcomes of organic practices overtime, and economically rewarding them in the market, supporting the development of the organic supply chain in rewarding ecological health and sustainability in farming.

While efforts are being made to develop similar methodologies for the organic context, farmers can engage with EOV™ through Savory Network hubs to access certification, monitoring tools, and the Land to Market Programme.
