On 18 November, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD, announced the commencement of payments under the 2025 Multi-Species Sward and Red Clover Silage Measures.
This Department of Agriculture scheme supports farmers facing rising input costs while promoting sustainable practices. It helps reduce reliance on artificial nitrogen fertilisers, improves silage and grazing quality, and delivers environmental benefits, including enhanced biodiversity and water quality.
Multi-species swards deliver high forage yields with reduced fertiliser use, cutting both costs and emissions. They support wildlife, are more resilient to drought, improve soil health, and help reduce reliance on parasite treatments. Additionally, incorporating red clover into swards offers significant advantages. Red clover silage is high in protein due to its nitrogen-fixing ability and can produce over 14 tonnes of dry matter per hectare. This helps farmers reduce their concentrate feed bills.
Over 1,200 farmers will benefit from €2.1 million in payments in the coming days, based on a payment rate of €300 per hectare, up to a maximum of 20 eligible hectares.
In cases where the Department has requested further information, farmers are encouraged to submit the required supporting documentation as soon as possible to facilitate prompt payment.
