LEADER Support for Athleague Hurling Club

Sep 10, 2025 | LEADER

Athleague Hurling Club was recently awarded €124,210.24 in funding under the 2023–2027 LEADER Programme. This funding supports the development of a fully accessible, well-lit, and biodiversity-friendly walking track at the club grounds in Clooneykelly, Athleague, Co. Roscommon. Construction work began in August 2025.

The proposed development includes:

  • A tarmacadam walking track circling the clubs two pitches, suitable for wheelchairs, buggies, and mobility aids.
  • Energy-efficient lighting for year-round, safe evening use.
  • A secure perimeter fence for safety.
  • Landscaping with native trees and plants, enhancing the area’s biodiversity.

Speaking about the funding, JP Murray, Chairperson of Athleague Hurling Club said:

This walking track will be a game-changer for our community – a safe, accessible, and inclusive space for people of all ages and abilities to get active, socialise, and enjoy the outdoors. We’re hugely grateful to the 2023-2027 LEADER Programme for backing this vision. It’s more than just a track – it’s an investment in the health, well-being, and cohesion of our rural community.”

The project aligns with the Rural Infrastructure and Social Inclusion theme of the Roscommon Local Development Strategy and contributes directly to the goal of improving quality of life in rural areas.

Niamh Nolan, Project Officer with Roscommon LEADER Partnership, commented:

This project is a strong example of what the 2023-2027 LEADER Programme is all about – community-driven development that responds to local needs. Athleague Hurling Club’s initiative blends physical infrastructure with inclusivity and sustainability, offering long-term value to the wider community.”

Tomás Beades, Operations Manager with Roscommon LEADER Partnership also welcomed the announcement:

The development of the walking track at Athleague Hurling Club is a shining example of an inclusive, environmentally conscious, and community-focused project that LEADER is proud to support. It reflects the ongoing commitment to enhancing local infrastructure and promoting health and wellbeing across County Roscommon. Building on the success of previous LEADER funded projects, which supported the development of walking tracks in numerous clubs throughout the county, this project highlights the lasting impact such initiatives have on communities. Athleague Hurling Club now joins a growing network of groups that have created accessible outdoor spaces, helping their communities to thrive both socially and physically.”

The walking track will be open to the public, encouraging everyday activity and social engagement among local residents. The club also plans to introduce new initiatives, such as walking and running groups, to further activate the space once complete.

This project reflects the ongoing commitment of the 2023-2027 LEADER Programme to building vibrant, sustainable communities across rural Ireland.
