LEADER Funded Upskilling Training Programme in Roscommon

Sep 16, 2025 | LEADER

Elphin New Cemetery Committee in Co. Roscommon was recently awarded LEADER funding to deliver two specialised training programmes in plastering and traditional stone masonry. This will be held over a three-week period and aims to address the growing shortage of skilled tradespeople in these high-demand areas.

The training will offer hands-on, practical training to unemployed individuals, youth, and those from disadvantaged communities, providing participants with the skills necessary to pursue employment in these specialised fields. With the support of 2023-2027 LEADER Programme, the project will help to close the skills gap in the construction industry while fostering local economic growth and ensuring the preservation of historic sites in the region. It will equip participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical, hands-on experience in plastering and stone wall construction. In addition, the participants will be mentored by experienced professionals throughout the programme, ensuring that they gain the technical expertise needed to succeed in these fields.

Valerie Byrne, Elphin New Cemetery Committee commented:
“This funding is a great opportunity for us to address the skills gap that currently exists in plastering and stone wall construction, while also preserving the unique heritage of our local communities. With the support of the 2023-2027 LEADER Programme, we are able to offer participants the chance to gain in-demand skills. We believe this training will have a lasting impact on both the individuals involved and the wider community.”

This initiative is designed to support local economic development while also preserving the cultural heritage of the region. The project will create long-term value for the community by providing a pipeline of skilled labour that will benefit local employers, encourage employment, and help preserve time-honoured traditions in the construction sector.

Niamh Nolan, Project Officer for Roscommon LEADER Partnership, added:
“The 2023-2027 LEADER Programme is designed to support projects that address local needs and foster sustainable development. This project embodies these goals perfectly, offering local solutions to local challenges. It’s an excellent example of how LEADER funding can be used to support both the economic and cultural development of rural communities.”

Tomas Beades, Operations Manager for Roscommon LEADER Partnership, said:
“We are thrilled to be involved in such an impactful project. This training not only addresses an immediate skills shortage but also ensures that the techniques and craftsmanship involved in preserving our heritage are passed on to future generations. It’s an investment in people, in skills, and in our community’s future.”
