The final meeting of the Irish Bioeconomy Forum 2.0 took place in Tralee on the 30th of September. Over two days the delegates had an opportunity to visit the MTU campus in Tralee, visit the research poster expo and showcases, and hear about MTU’s bioeconomy research activity. The keynote speech was delivered by Pádraig Mallon, Sustainability Director, Kerry Group along with presentations from Tim Yeomans of the CABR Research Group, Helena McMahon and James Gaffey of the Circbio Research Group and Michael Noctor of the Circular Bioeconomy Cluster.

The Irish Bioeconomy Forum was formally launched in October 2020 with a 2-year mandate. The role of the Forum is to provide a voice for a broad range of stakeholders, including industry, community groups, NGOs and relevant state bodies to promote, support and advocate for the sustainable development of the bioeconomy in Ireland. The Forum gives particular focus to balancing the research and development, regulatory and market needs to support the development of Ireland’s bio-based economy.

Following the publication of Ireland’s first Bioeconomy Action Plan in October 2023 where Action 1.3 detailed a specific objective to renew the Irish Bioeconomy Forum for the period of the Action Plan (up to 2025) and to develop and implement an annual operational work programme for the group. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and the Department of the Climate, Energy and the Environment as the lead stakeholders for this task, worked to re-establish the Irish Bioeconomy Forum 2.0 in 2024.

Following the meeting in Tralee the final task for the Irish Bioeconomy Forum 2.0 is to report on the past 2 years’ work particularly on the development of a bio-industrial network in Ireland and the significant steps forward in Bioeconomy demonstration activities on the island.

Membership of the forum includes representatives from a wide range of organisations including; Dawn Meats, UCD, Bord Iascaigh Mhara, Natural Capital Ireland, Teagasc, ESB, Irish Bioeconomy Foundation, ICOS, IrBEA, TUD, TCD, Marine Institute, UoG, MTU, UCC and UL.
