International Knowledge Platform of Organic Research and Innovation

Dec 4, 2025 | Innovation, Organics

The web-based platformorganic-farmknowledge.orgis aimed at filling the gap in the exchange of information between organic farmers, advisors and other stakeholders across Europe. The platform was launched in October 2016 within the projectOK-Net Arable and has been further expanded through other projects, such as OK-Net EcoFeed. The platform is managed by three organisations: IFOAM Organics Europe, Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL, and International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems (ICROFS).

The motivation underlying the development of the platform is to address the limited exchange on organic farming techniques within and across countries, between farmers, farm advisors, and scientists. This exchange is important because the complexity of organic farming requires farmers to have a very high level of knowledge and skills.

Some of the topics currently on the platform include:

  • Soil quality and fertility
  • Nutrient management
  • Pest and disease control
  • Weed management
  • Cropping systems and crop specific
  • Animal health
  • Pigs
  • Broilers
  • Layers

Several Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe andCORE Organicprojects joined the platform and intend to use it to disseminate their practice-oriented outputs. For example, LIVESEED(Improve performance of organic agriculture by boosting organic seed and plant breeding efforts across Europe),RELACS(Replacement of Contentious Inputs in organic farming Systems),ReMIX(Redesigning European cropping systems based on species MIXtures) and all recentCORE Organicprojects (Coordination of European Transnational Research in Organic Food and Farming Systems).

The Irish Organics Association (IOA) is a member of the editorial committee and the Irish representative of the platform. Research and knowledge can be filtered by country, farm context and research topic when using the platform to find information specific to a user’s needs. Knowledge is uploaded to the website in different available formats e.g. video, calculation tools, leaflets etc. While Irish specific organic research outputs are limited, organic research in Ireland is growing within national research institutions as it is increasingly relevant to a sustainable food system as well as our national and EU targets. Despite this, the platform is a valuable resource for Irish organic farmers, advisors and researchers to learn from organic research outputs from other European member states.

The latest data available on the usage of the platform shows more than 100k visits in the first 6 months of 2024. Furthermore, the site also includes a directory of organic advisory services available across Europe which is reviewed bi-annually and being developed under several Horizon Europe Projects.

The Organic Farm Knowledge Platform is available to access and is continuously being developed by partners across Europe. Promotion of the use of the website may benefit organic farmers, as well as farm advisors, and researchers, in Ireland. Further information about the platform can be found in the following report available to download from the OK-Net EcoFeed website.
