On 12 November 2025, Michael Healy-Rae TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with special responsibility for Horticulture, officially launched the 2026 Horticulture Innovation and Diversification Programmes. The announcement took place during the first Horticulture Industry Forum (HIF) growers meeting, which he organised and co-chaired. The event brought together many horticultural growers, highlighting the importance of this forum as a space for sharing challenges and opportunities in the sector.
Established in 2014, the HIF brings together fresh produce growers to address major challenges facing the sector. It collaborates with government, state agencies, distributors and other stakeholders to support a sustainable and innovative horticulture industry. This first public meeting enabled growers to exchange views, discuss opportunities, and engage with key organisations such as Bord Bia and the Irish Farmers’ Association.
Key points from the Minister’s announcements:
- Horticulture Innovation and Diversification Programmes for 2026 are now open. These schemes support the National Horticulture Strategy’s vision of a more profitable, sustainable, and innovative sector by promoting increased innovation and diversification among primary producers.
- A presentation of the interim review will be published in 2026. Progress to date indicates that the target of €688 million in farmgate value by 2027 is on track.
- The Minister announced plans to establish a Horticulture Education Leadership Group (HELG) with a chairperson to continue progress under Key Strategic Action No. 4 on the Review of Horticulture Education.
Application forms and conditions for the 2026 programmes are available online or can be requested by email at horticulturegrants@agriculture.gov.ie. The deadline for completed applications for all Innovation and Diversification Schemes is midnight, Friday 23 January 2026.
