Further Extension Announced to the National Liming Programme

A further extension to the date by which lime must be spread under the National Liming Programme has been announced. Thursday 31st October 2024.is the new date by which lime, purchased under the scheme must be spread.

The previous deadline for completion of the spreading of lime had been set for the end of June 2024 but the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) made the decision to extend the deadline based on ongoing issues with soil trafficability that are apparent in some parts of the country.

Information gathered by DAFM reported that lime quarries estimated that only slightly more than 30% of pre-paid lime has been spread to date. This figure is even lower in certain parts of the country.
The Liming Programme was launched in spring 2023 to incentivise the use of lime as a natural soil conditioner which corrects soil acidity, make nutrients more available for plant uptake and improve overall soil health. Since the launch, over 14,500 claims have been submitted with advance payments issued to farmers in December 2023. There will be no further extension beyond this date as balancing payments are required to be processed and made in 2024.
