The Heritage Hotel in Laois hosted the empowering ‘Resilient Industry: Adapting to Change’ event, organised by Macra na Feirme and the Agricultural Science Association (ASA). The focus of the event was to highlight the vital role of women in the agricultural sector with all the proceeds going to Breast Cancer Ireland.

The first panel showcased the accomplishments of the women speakers from diverse backgrounds, delving into the unique challenges they faced on their respective journeys and the strategies they employed to overcome them. Discussions ranged from the work/life balance to addressing childcare and time constraints for women. Orla Treacy shared eye-opening insights into the challenges faced by women in South Sudan, where educational opportunities are limited. The panel also explored the changing visibility of women’s roles on the farm, emphasising their strength and the importance of collaboration with the younger generation. The discussion concluded by underlining the significance of self-reflection, gratitude, adaptability, and personal drive.

The second panel delved into the challenges confronting the Agri-Industry, emphasising the necessity for informed decision -making by farmers. Topics covered included the impact of technology, research, preventative approaches, farm viability, labour considerations, and the adoption of sustainable measures. The discussions highlighted the dynamic nature of the industry and the necessity for adaptability when faced with change.

This inspiring event featured a diverse array of organisations and innovative women, offering a platform for sharing personal experiences and stories. Attendees gained valuable insights into navigating changes within their respective sectors, witnessing first-hand the resilience displayed in overcoming challenges. The speakers highlighted the significance of cultivating a culture of ‘Championing and supporting each other,’ emphasising the mutual support and encouragement among women in the industry as they propel each other forward.
