On 23 January, Martin Heydon TD, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, announced the launch of a call for proposals for the Agri-Food Tourism Initiative. The Minister noted that the initiative aligns with the Department’s agri-food sector strategy, Food Vision 2030.
Agri-food tourism involves offering activities in areas known for agricultural produce, allowing visitors to sample and experience local or regional food and drink. These activities may include farm stays, food trails, festivals, and other food-related events.
The objective of the initiative is to strengthen connections between local food producers and tourism experiences. It aims to support business development, assist rural enterprises in developing products and services, and fund marketing initiatives that promote food and drink as visitor attractions. The initiative also seeks to enhance connections between communities and visitors and to improve the overall rural visitor experience. Ireland’s agri-food sector is a key driver of the national economy, particularly in rural and coastal areas.
A total of €300,000 in funding is available, with a maximum grant of €25,000 payable per project.
Projects supported under the initiative in 2025 included Cromane Seafest, the Taste of Sligo Food Festival, and the Wildacres Honey Tour. The Minister has expressed his wish to see the 2026 programme build on this success by supporting further innovative opportunities.
Applications must be submitted using the Call for Proposals application form, available on the Department’s website. All applications will be assessed through a competitive evaluation process.
The closing date for receipt of applications is 12.00 noon on Wednesday, 25 February 2026.
