Breeding Waders
The Breeding Waders EIP project is the focus of this Innovation Spotlight. Ireland's Breeding Wader populations have suffered dramatic declines in population size and national breeding range since the 1970s.
The Breeding Waders EIP project aims to secure existing Breeding Wader populations and support population recovery through landscape management and policy development. The project will deal with 10 different wader species, including the Curlew, Lapwing, Snipe, Redshank, Dunlin, Golden Plover.
The project will establish connections with landowners, stakeholders and communities to foster a comprehensive understanding of the Breeding Waders’ requirements within the landscape. By recognising, valuing, and protecting these species, the EIP-Agri project is promoting a range of ecosystem services that are of benefit to the whole of society.

Key outputs of the project will include:
- Halt the decline in the Irish Breeding Wader population
- Raise awareness of Breeding Waders and associated downward pressures (community engagement and outreach)
- Drive population recovery on a National level
- Increase capacity in the Predation Risk Management sector
- Drive policy and increase awareness of the needs of Breeding Waders among policy makers
- Implement positive Breeding Wader actions on non-commercially farmed land
