Bioeconomy Takes Centre Stage at the Ploughing Championships

The National Ploughing Championships once again showcased the power of Irish innovation and this year the bioeconomy took a prominent place in the Government of Ireland Village in the “We’re Taking Climate Action” tent. The stand was hosted with support from BiOrbic, Ireland’s Bioeconomy Research Centre, which brings together researchers, industry, and communities to drive innovation.

At the Irish Bioeconomy Stand, visitors discovered how nature-based and circular solutions are creating new opportunities for farmers, communities, and businesses while helping Ireland take climate action.

Three inspiring projects were highlighted:

  • Circular Reno – showing how buildings can be redesigned and upgraded using bio-based materials and recycled components to cut waste and carbon.
  • Palus Demos – pioneering sustainable use of peatlands and wetlands to store carbon, protect biodiversity, and produce renewable biomass.
  • Dooleys Wool – reimagining Irish wool as a valuable, natural resource for textiles, insulation, and other sustainable applications.

Across the three days Patrick Daly (TU Dublin – Circ Reno), Niall O’Brolchain (Palus Demos), Kevin Dooley (Dooley’s Wool), Carmen Dominguez (BiOrbic – BBioNet), Laosie Ní Chleirigh (BiOrobic – BioBeo), Martha O’Hagan Luff (BiOrbic – Refarm), and Lia Freitas (BiOrbic) took to the stage to showcase their ongoing work and research.

Farmers, innovators, and communities play a central role in the bioeconomy, and the Ploughing Championships offered a perfect stage to connect policy with practical action. The stand also invited visitors to join Bioeconomy Ireland Week this 13-19 October, a nationwide celebration of Ireland’s bioeconomy. The theme this year is “Inspiring local communities for a sustainable, competitive Ireland”.

Ireland’s bioeconomy is building a future that’s sustainable, competitive, and rooted in our natural advantage and the Ploughing Championships showed that future is already here.
