Baling Assistance Payment Scheme Launched to Boost Fodder Reserves

Aug 8, 2024 | Farm Viability

A new Baling Assistance Payment (BAP) scheme has been announced to run in tandem with the Straw Incorporation Measure (SIM). This step has been taken to ensure that there will be an adequate supply of bedding material and fodder available for the livestock sector across the country ahead of next winter.

A payment of €175 per hectare will be made under the BAP scheme for all successful applicants to the SIM 2024 who withdraw a portion of land from SIM and bale the straw instead of chopping or incorporating it into the soil. The area of land eligible under the BAP scheme will be confined to a minimum of 1 hectare and a maximum of 40 hectares. Wheat, Oats, Barley and Rye are crops eligible under the BAP but Oilseed Rape will not be allowed.

At the announcement of this measure Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, T.D. made an appeal to livestock farmers:

I am encouraging livestock farmers to be proactive and order sufficient fodder supplies. As stated previously I believe that pro-active action is necessary to prevent a potential fodder issue for many farmers this year.”
