Award Winning Ilaun Farm Forest Alliance

The Ilaun Farm Forest Alliance European Innovation Partnership (EIP) project was an award winning project managed by Hometree in Co. Clare. The aim of the project was to enhance biodiversity on farms surrounding and including the Ilaun site in the Glendine Valley in the west of the county and link the 6.5ha site to a biodiverse rich oak wood 1 kilometre away. This was achieved, by creating, expanding and rehabilitating woodland habitat.

A key feature of the project was the collaboration between project staff and 12 local landowners who agreed to have woodland, shelterbelts and tree buffers on riparian zones planted on their farms. Shelterbelts were a particularly popular choice given the exposed nature of the western seaboard. These farmers were also supported by staff in their applications for the Native Woodland Scheme, the results of which saw 11 licence applications being approved by the forest service and a significant increase in the population of native trees in the area. In total, 100 acres of native woodland were planted. Of the 135,000 trees that were planted, 30,000 were native.

At the Ilaun site itself, work was undertaken to transform an existing monoculture spruce plantation into a mixed woodland. The biodiversity on the site was assessed beforehand and recommendations were made to improve the ecological status of the habitats. This site has now hosted several demonstrations relating to farm woodland creation and management.

Throughout the duration of the project, updates and reports on all activities were shared through social media, national radio stations, and by recording high-quality promotional and educational videos. The project also worked hard to share knowledge with all stakeholders. Discussion groups with farmers and demonstration days with experts were held regularly. All these initiatives helped project staff to achieve a better understanding of local attitudes towards biodiversity and promoted innovative approaches to land management in west Clare.

The project was one of three Irish projects nominated for the prestigious EIP-AGRI Innovation awards held in Estoril, Portugal on May 7th, 2024, and was declared the winner in the Sustainable Forest Management category.
