Announcement of the Opening of the Organic Farming Scheme

Nov 20, 2025 | Farm Viability, Green Architecture

As part of efforts to expand Ireland’s organic sector, the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD, has announced the opening of the Organic Farming Scheme on 19 November. Applications will be accepted from 19 November until 12 December, with priority access given to applicants from the tillage sector.

Between 2021 and 2025, participation in the scheme increased by 221%, reaching 5,500 farmers. In response to this rapid growth, €58.6 million has been allocated for 2026 to maintain financial support for organic producers and to facilitate a targeted reopening for tillage farmers. This investment supports the national Climate Action Plan, which aims for 10% of agricultural land to be farmed organically by 2030. The scheme also forms part of Ireland’s wider Organic Strategy, which seeks to strengthen market demand, support producers and develop a more sustainable and competitive organic value chain by 2030.

The opportunities and challenges of organic tillage are becoming increasingly evident. Demand for organic oats continues to rise, driven primarily by the UK market, with growing interest from international buyers. At the same time, Department surveys show a strong and increasing need for organic feed of all types to meet winter feeding requirements. These trends highlight the importance of the Organic Farming Scheme, the Organic Processing Investment Grant and strategic promotional efforts by Bord Bia.

Beyond financial supports, the success of organic farming relies on sector-wide collaboration. Significant progress has been made with organic control bodies, farming families and rural communities to make organic farming a viable option for young farmers and for conventional farmers seeking to diversify. Enhanced advisory services, increased promotion and actions to stimulate market demand are all contributing to this transition.

According to Minister Heydon, these combined efforts aim to build a more sustainable, profitable and resilient organic agri-food sector in the years ahead.
