Agri-Food Regulator Formally Established

Dec 15, 2023 | Farm Viability

The board of the new Agri-Food Regulator sat for the first time on the 13th December 2023. The meeting took place at the Regulators new HQ on the Government campus in Backweston in Co. Kildare.

The formal establishment of the regulator fulfils a commitment in the current Programme for Government and had widespread support from both houses of the Oireachtas. The Agri-Food Regulator is an independent statutory Office established under the Agricultural and Food Supply Chain Act 2023 with the aim of creating a new independent authority to bring fairness and transparency to the agricultural and food supply chain.

This will be done through publishing analysis of information about price and market data relating to the agricultural and food supply chain and enforcing the rules on unfair trading practices.

The Agri-Food Regulator will consist of a Board of 8 members that will be chaired by Joe Healy which will make decisions about the Offices policies and key functions. The Executive Staff will then implement the agreed policies. Niamh Lenehan has been appointed as CEO of the Regulator.

The work of the Agri-Food Regulator can be followed on its website.
