The launch of the latest tranche of the Organic Processing Investment Grant (OPIG) Scheme has been announced. This particular tranche is open from the 9th of January to the 8th of February 2025. Following unprecedented investment in the organic processing sector in 2024, €3.5 million has been allocated for 2025.
Funding under the OPIG scheme is available to processors who wish to invest in developing facilities for the processing, preparation, grading, packing and storage of organic products. An additional 700 farmers have begun the process of converting to organic farming in 2025, which will eventually lead to 5,600 organic farmers operating in Ireland. This new investment in the organic processing sector will be expected to assist in increasing efficiency and capacity, and ensuring that a market premium is obtained for Irish organic produce.
The OPIG grant rate was increased to 60% in 2024 and as a result of this investment in the organic sector trebled. This investment will help the sector to enable the Irish State to reach its target of 10% certified organic produce when procuring food as well as reaching the target in the National Organic Strategy of more than trebling the value of organic output by 2030.
At the announcement, Minister of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, T.D. said: “I welcome the focus on ensuring that organic farmers, fishers and food producers are competitive and productive, with enhanced well-being and economic sustainability. The incomes of our producers are central and critical to the success of our FoodVision 2030 strategy, as they are the bedrock of our world-class organic agri-food sector.” The food categories to which the 10% organic rule applies are cereals, fresh beef, lamb, pork, poultry, fish, vegetables, and dairy produce. This new Green Public Procurement (GPP) Strategy has replaced the old system of ‘green tenders’.
Minister of State Senator Pippa Hackett also commented at the announcement: “I know from talking to processors that there is significant interest in the OPIG scheme. This scheme, along with the ongoing work of Bord Bia and the entire sector, demonstrates to organic farmers that we are making every effort to ensure that there will be strong demand for their produce. Last September a new National Organic Strategy was launched for 2024-2030, continued investment in processing capacity being a key priority for the sector, and this scheme will ultimately help us to ensure that farmers receive a premium price for organic product.”
Applications must be submitted by post or email on or before 7th February 2025. Application forms and details concerning terms and conditions can be found here.
