Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD, today launched the Spotlight on Female-Led Sustainability booklet, an initiative under the Women in Agriculture Action Plan. This new publication highlights the vital role women play in driving social, environmental, and economic sustainability within Ireland’s agri-food sector.
Developed by the Women in Agriculture Working Group, the booklet features profiles of twelve inspiring women, including farmers, fishers, foresters, and food producers. Each of them is leading sustainability efforts in their respective fields. These offer powerful examples and role models to encourage more women and young girls to pursue careers in agriculture. The CSO’s Farm Structure Survey 2023 showed women account for 13.2% of the 133,174 farm holders in Ireland and 34% of the 299,725 total farm workers.
Launch of the booklet
To mark the launch, Minister Heydon visited the stud farm of Mariann Klay in Swordlestown, Naas, Co. Kildare, one of the women featured in the publication. Mariann has managed the farm full-time since 2003 and is a committed ‘Farming for Nature’ ambassador. Her work emphasises biodiversity as a cornerstone of sustainable farming, making her a standout example of female-led environmental innovation.
Speaking at the event, Minister Heydon acknowledged the critical role women play in ensuring a sustainable future for the agri-food sector. “Advancing the role of women in agriculture is a key priority for me and a core commitment in the Programme for Government,” he said. “Gender balance is essential to the long-term viability of the sector. Through initiatives like the Women in Agriculture Action Plan, we are seeing how women are leading the way in sustainability, helping to build a resilient and thriving future for Irish farming. I was delighted to celebrate this progress at Mariann’s farm today.”
The Women in Agriculture Action Plan
The Women in Agriculture Action Plan, launched in 2022, outlines key measures to support and increase women’s participation across farming, forestry, and fisheries. It includes actions around education, training, visibility, financial supports, and leadership development. The Spotlight on Female-Led Sustainability represents a tangible output of this strategy, bringing to life the stories of women who are making measurable environmental and community impact. Elisa Goode, Chairperson of ‘The Women in Agriculture Working Group’ added “The 12 women featured in this booklet embody the strength, determination and perseverance of all women engaged in farming and the wider agri-food sector”, “These women are just a small sample of the many strong female role models contributing to a more sustainable and viable Irish agri-food sector for generations to come.” The Spotlight on Female-Led Sustainability Booklet can be downloaded here.
