Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue TD, has announced that over 34,000 environmental actions have been approved under the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES) ACRES Non-Productive Investment Programme. These initiatives, carried out by more than 4,100 farmers across Ireland, aim to enhance environmental integrity, improve biodiversity, and safeguard water quality.
Environmental Actions Under ACRES
The approved actions, part of the ACRES Non-Productive Investment (NPI) programme, include:
• Installing bat boxes and nest boxes for barn owls and kestrels.
• The erection of gates and electric fencing to prevent over- or under-grazing.
• Relocating water troughs to optimal locations.
In total, 4,148 farmers, representing 96.7% of all applicants, are set to receive confirmation today of their successful or partially successful applications for Non-Productive Investments under the ACRES Co-Operation Scheme for 2023.
Ministerial Remarks
Minister McConalogue emphasised the importance of these investments, stating: “These initiatives are a core part of ACRES, enabling farmers to adopt targeted measures that enhance environmental outcomes on their land while also increasing payments under the scheme. The 34,085 approved actions undertaken by farmers nationwide are vital for preserving environmental integrity and fostering biodiversity.”
Application and Approval Process
Applications for NPIs are submitted in the form of NPI Annual Work Plans by ACRES advisors on behalf of participating farmers. The Minister explained that applications were submitted for 4,288 participants, encompassing 43,896 individual NPIs. These applications were reviewed by ACRES Co-Operation Project teams, and their decisions have been submitted to the Department for approval.
Decision letters for these applications will be accessible on agfood.ie from today, with hard copies sent by post in the coming days. Additionally, an ‘ACRES CP NPI-Annual Works Plan 2023 Approval Summary’ will be uploaded on agfood.ie shortly, and hard copies will be issued in January 2025. This summary will provide detailed information on approved NPIs, including parcel-specific maps highlighting their locations. Systems to facilitate claim submissions and payment processing for these investments are
expected to be operational in early 2025.
2024 Applications and Timeline
The application window for 2024 NPIs closed on 31st October 2024. The ACRES Co-Operation Project Teams have already begun screening these applications.
