SUMMARY:Agroforestry Walk Skibbereen
DESCRIPTION:Join the Irish Agroforestry Forum at 1pm on Wednesday\, 25th September 2024\, for an agroforestry farm walk with Rossa Gibbons at his 13-hectare organic farm in Munig\, Skibbereen\, Co.Cork. \nRossa’s farm features both forestry and agroforestry (silvopasture sheep). Currently building a pedigree Shropshire sheep flock\, Rossa is focused on producing quality breeding stock and organic lamb for local supply\, with his flock registered with the UK Shropshire Sheep Society. \nDuring the walk\, you will explore various plots on the farm. The first forestry scheme\, established 22 years ago\, spans 3.5 hectares and includes Oak and Larch\, as well as Alder and Birch on the more marginal ground. The initial planting was completed by contractors. Another forestry plantation\, now 8 years old and also covering 3.5 hectares\, features ten broadleaf species\, including walnut and Scots Pine\, and was planted by Rossa himself. \nYou will also see a 2.4-hectare agroforestry plot\, established 5 years ago and funded under GPC 11\, which includes a silvopasture system with Shropshire sheep\, ten or eleven broadleaf species\, and 15% fruit and nut trees\, all planted by Rossa with 8-meter spacing between trees and silage/hay harvested. \nThe farm walk is funded by Forestry Promotion Funding provided by the Department of Agriculture\, Food and Marine.

SUMMARY:1st meeting of the Thematic Group on Enhancing Biodiversity on Farmland for Improved Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Food production and farming practices can have both positive and negative impacts on biodiversity. The interactions between farming and biodiversity therefore play a critical role for the resilience of food production and sustainable resource management. This can be the case through supporting the pollination of crops and the control of pests and diseases\, contributing to productive soils\, nutrient and carbon cycles\, water quality as well as improving the resilience of farming systems to climate change through helping mitigate the effects of droughts and floods. However\, biodiversity continues to decline\, particularly on farmland. \nIn this first meeting we will look at Member States’ experiences in designing and implementing interventions at the necessary scale for improving biodiversity outcomes on farmland (improving species’ populations\, habitat restoration\, habitat connectivity). We will explore what factors have contributed to successful outcomes as well as challenges that need to be overcome. \nAims of the first TG meeting: \n\nShare good practice examples of initiatives for delivering biodiversity outcomes on farmland at the necessary scale (e.g. involving multiple farms; using collective approaches).\nExplore the success factors as well as the issues and challenges facing the design and implementation of interventions for improving biodiversity outcomes on farmland.\nIdentify the main areas of interest for further in-depth discussion.
